Dust-to-gas Ratio and Metal Abundance in Dwarf Galaxies
We have compared the metallicity (represented by oxygen abundance), Xo, and the dust-to-gas ratio, D, in a sample of dwarf galaxies. For dwarf irregulars (dIrrs) we find a good correlation between the two quantities, with a power-law index 0.52± 0.25. Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies do not show such a good correlation; in addition both the dust-to-gas ratio and the metallicity tend to be high...
متن کاملGas Absorption in the Kh 15d System: Further Evidence for Dust Settling in the Circumbinary Disk
Na i D lines in the spectrum of the young binary KH 15D have been analyzed in detail. We find an excess absorption component that may be attributed to foreground interstellar absorption, and to gas possibly associated with the solids in the circumbinary disk. The derived column density is log NNa i = 12.5 cm−2, centered on a radial velocity that is consistent with the systemic velocity. Subtrac...
متن کاملExtinction and dust/gas ratio in LMC molecular clouds
Aims. The goal of this paper is to measure the dust content and distribution in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by comparing extinction maps produced in the near-infrared wavelengths and the spatial distribution of the neutral and molecular gas, as traced by H i and CO observations. Methods. In order to derive an extinction map of the LMC, we have developed a new method to measure the color ex...
متن کاملDust Size Growth and Settling in a Protoplanetary Disk
We have studied dust evolution in a quiescent or turbulent protoplanetary disk by numerically solving coagulation equation for settling dust particles, using the minimum mass solar nebular model. As a result, if we assume an ideally quiescent disk, the dust particles settle toward the disk midplane to form a gravitationally unstable layer within 2× 103–4× 10yr at 1–30 AU, which is in good agree...
متن کاملCarbon Monoxide and Dust Column Densities: The Dust to Gas Ratio and Structure of Three Giant Molecular Cloud Cores
We have observed emission in the three lowest rotational transitions of the optically thin species C 18 O and the dust continuum emission at three millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths. By employing the proper combination of the intensities of the three lowest rotational transitions of C 18 O, we can obtain the total molecular column density with relatively little sensitivity to density and temp...
